Understanding Diabetes: Causes, Diet, Risks and the Importance of Timely Care By Dr. Anup Agrawal, Consultant – Internal Medicine & Diabetologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur

Diabetes has become one of the fastest-growing health concerns across the world, and India is often referred to as the “Diabetes Capital of the World.” With changing lifestyles, sedentary habits, unhealthy diets, and increasing stress levels, the number of people living with diabetes continues to rise every year. Unfortunately, many individuals remain unaware that they are diabetic until complications begin to appear. Creating awareness about diabetes, its causes, prevention, and management is therefore extremely important, explains Dr. Anup Agrawal, Consultant – Internal Medicine & Diabetologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur.

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. Glucose is the main source of energy for the body and is obtained from the food we eat. The hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas, helps glucose enter the body’s cells to be used as energy. In people with diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. As a result, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, leading to high blood sugar levels. According to Dr. Anup Agrawal, understanding how diabetes develops helps people take preventive measures early.

There are primarily two common types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. It is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Type 2 diabetes, which is the most common form, occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. This type is more commonly seen in adults but is increasingly being diagnosed in younger individuals due to lifestyle factors, says Dr. Anup Agrawal.

Several factors can increase the risk of developing diabetes. A family history of diabetes, obesity, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating habits, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are among the most common causes. Stress and poor sleep patterns can also contribute to hormonal imbalance and insulin resistance. Dr. Anup Agrawal notes that in many cases, individuals may not experience noticeable symptoms in the early stages, which makes regular health check-ups essential.

Some common symptoms that may indicate diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, slow wound healing, and frequent infections. If these symptoms are ignored for a long time, uncontrolled diabetes can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, kidneys, nerves, eyes, and blood vessels. Dr. Anup Agrawal emphasizes that early diagnosis and proper treatment can significantly reduce these risks.

Diet plays a crucial role in both preventing and managing diabetes. A balanced and nutritious diet helps maintain stable blood sugar levels and supports overall health. People should focus on consuming whole grains, fresh vegetables, fruits in controlled portions, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Foods that are high in refined sugar, processed carbohydrates, and saturated fats should be limited. Dr. Anup Agrawal advises that maintaining regular meal timings and portion control are equally important in managing blood glucose levels effectively.

Along with diet, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, weight management, stress reduction, and adequate sleep play a significant role in diabetes prevention and control. Even simple activities such as brisk walking for 30 minutes a day can greatly improve insulin sensitivity and overall metabolic health, adds Dr. Anup Agrawal.

Diabetes can affect people of all age groups, but individuals who are overweight, have a family history of diabetes, or lead sedentary lifestyles are at a higher risk. Early detection and proper medical guidance can help prevent long-term complications and ensure a healthy life for those living with diabetes.

Recognizing the growing need for specialized diabetes care, Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur, is launching a dedicated Diabetologist Clinic to provide comprehensive diabetes screening, management, and patient education.

“Diabetes is a manageable condition if detected early and treated properly. With the right combination of medical care, dietary guidance, and lifestyle changes, patients can lead a healthy and active life,” says Dr. Anup Agrawal, Consultant – Internal Medicine & Diabetologist.
