A New Hope with Keyhole Surgery: 8-Year-Old Girl from Madhya Pradesh Recovers After Complex Kidney Operation at Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur

October 25,2025

An eight-year-old girl from Madhya Pradesh, who had been suffering from persistent pain in her left flank, recently found relief after undergoing a successful laparoscopic kidney surgery at Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur. The child was diagnosed with a severely grade PUJO, a condition in which urine flow is blocked, causing the kidney to swell and leading to thinning of tissue and eventual loss of function.

Detailed evaluation with a CT scan and DTPA renogram revealed that the child’s left kidney had stopped functioning completely, leaving surgical removal as the only safe option. The case was particularly challenging due to the child’s young age and the large size of the affected kidney.

Under the care of Dr. Shrikant Jai, Consultant Urologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur, the surgical team decided to perform a laparoscopic (keyhole) nephrectomy, a minimally invasive approach that uses small incisions and specialized instruments to remove the diseased kidney. Though technically demanding in small children, this advanced technique offers significant benefits such as reduced pain, minimal scarring, and faster recovery.

The surgery was completed smoothly through tiny incisions, and the young patient recovered remarkably well postoperatively. She was able to walk the very next day and was discharged on the third postoperative day, smiling and pain-free.

“Laparoscopic surgery in children requires special expertise and equipment, but it significantly improves recovery and comfort,” said Dr. Shrikant Jai, Consultant Urologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur. “It is heartening to see such advanced techniques being routinely performed in Nagpur, benefitting patients even from distant places of Madhya Pradesh.”

In recent years, minimally invasive urological surgeries—including laparoscopic and robotic procedures—have transformed the way complex kidney and urinary tract conditions are treated. Earlier, children had to undergo open surgeries with large scars and longer recovery times. Today, with keyhole surgery, even complicated cases such as non-functioning kidneys can be managed safely and effectively.

With modern minimally invasive techniques now available at Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur, advanced pediatric kidney surgeries can be performed safely, ensuring quicker recovery and better outcomes for young patients.
