Suriya Sivakumar on moving to Mumbai with Jyotika: Why take away my wife's time from her parents?

October 30,2024

Tamil actor Suriya opened up about his decision to move to Mumbai with his family, highlighting the importance of family dynamics and personal growth in their lives. Suriya, married to actress Jyotika, shared insights into the motivations behind their relocation and the impact it has had on their family life.

Suriya's remarks centered on Jyotika's long history in Chennai, where she lived for nearly 27 years. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, he said , "At the age of 18-19, she shifted to Chennai. Almost 27 years, she was in Chennai and spent only 18 years in Mumbai. She was with me, my family. She gave up her career, friends, relatives, and her Bandra lifestyle. Everything was given up, and she was in Chennai."

Now, Suriya feels it is time for Jyotika to reconnect with her roots and enjoy the benefits of living in Mumbai. "She's happy spending time with her parents after 27 years," he remarked. His recognition of Jyotika's needs as equally important to his own illustrates a modern approach to partnership. "Whatever a man needs, a woman also needs that," he asserted. "She needs those vacations, her friends, financial independence. She needs respect, her gym time, and me time. Whatever we [men] crave for, she needs them too."

This perspective on equality in relationships is refreshing and speaks to the evolving dynamics of modern family life. Suriya's intention behind the move is clear: to provide Jyotika with the space to reclaim aspects of her life that she had set aside. "Why take away her time from her parents, her lifestyle, and what she loves to do? When are we going to do that change? Why is it always me?" he questioned, emphasizing the need for mutual growth and happiness in a marriage.

The couple's move to Mumbai has also brought positive changes for their children, Diya and Dev. Suriya mentioned that they were part of an IB school in Chennai, but found better opportunities in Mumbai, which contributed to their decision. "It's a blessing that my kids are studying well, and they want to excel and get good at it," he stated, expressing his contentment with their educational journey.

Balancing professional commitments while ensuring family time has been a priority for Suriya. He elaborated on how he manages his time between Chennai and Mumbai, stating, "I am balancing between Chennai and Mumbai. I take off for at least 10 days a month. I don't shoot at all. For the remaining 20 days, I don't mind shooting for 18-20 hours." This careful division allows him to dedicate quality time to his family, free from work obligations. "For those 10 days, there's no phone call from the office or work," he noted, emphasizing the importance of being present in his children's lives.

During this time, Suriya enjoys simple yet meaningful activities with his kids. "I am happy to walk with my daughter to the park or go for a drive or have ice cream. I enjoy taking my son for basketball." Such moments reflect the joy he finds in parenting and the importance of nurturing those familial bonds.

On the professional front, Suriya is set to appear in director Siruthai Siva's highly anticipated film, "Kanguva," scheduled for release on November 14. Meanwhile, Jyotika has completed shooting for her project "Dabba Cartel." As both actors continue to evolve in their careers, their move to Mumbai marks a significant chapter in their lives, one that emphasizes the importance of family, mutual respect, and personal growth.
