Innovation Meets Expertise: SMHRC Conducts High-Risk C-Section Inside Cath Lab
A remarkable and heartwarming milestone was achieved at 1020 bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre, Wanadongri, Nagpur. Recently a 30-year-old patient from Isasani, Hingna, bravely fought through a very high-risk pregnancy complication ‘Placenta Previa Accreta’ and was discharged safely along with her healthy baby. The case stands out not only for its complexity but also for the exceptional teamwork, innovation, and coordination demonstrated by multiple departments.
Placenta Previa Accreta is a rare yet life-threatening obstetric condition where the placenta attaches abnormally deep into the uterine wall and, in some cases, covers the cervix. This leads to severe bleeding during pregnancy or delivery and often requires advanced surgical planning. Many such cases end in massive hemorrhage, hysterectomy, or, tragically, loss of life. Managing such patients demands rapid decision-making, expert surgical hands, and strong interdepartmental collaboration.
Recognizing the complexity of the case, the OBGY team—led by Professor Dr. Smita Parate, along with Dr. Snehal Deshmukh, Dr. Mrunmayee Hemane, and Dr. Krishna Kela under the guidance of Dr. Rajasi Sengupta- HOD,OBGYN, performed a high-risk classical caesarean section inside the Cath Lab, a first-of-its-kind approach at the institution. Interventional radiologist Dr. Nikunj Chaudhary reinforced the surgical safety by performing uterine and internal iliac artery embolization, drastically reducing the risk of life-threatening bleeding.
The anesthesiology team of Dr. Karuna Gaikwad and Dr. Priyanka Parate led by Dr. Anjali Modak- HOD Anesthesia ensured a stable intraoperative course, while neonatologist Dr. Kush Jhunjhunwala provided immediate care to the newborn. Dr. Anand Hatgaonkar and Dr. Vaishali Dhwan, Radiologists enabled early and accurate diagnosis, which was critical for planning this intricate procedure. ICU teams, OT staff, and the dedicated nursing team, Sr.Vishakha Hiwarkar- ANS, Sr. Bhagyashree Mahakalkar, and Sr Sushma Chavan from MCH, SR. Ragini, Br. Nilesh, Sr. Premshila, Mr. Chaitanya & Mr. Chaitanya (Cath lab Technician) provided the essential support during pre & post-surgery care.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Smita Parate, Professor, OBGYN, said, “Placenta Previa Accreta is one of the most challenging conditions in obstetrics. The risk of hemorrhage is extremely high, and saving both the mother and the uterus requires meticulous planning. Performing the surgery in the Cath Lab allowed us to control bleeding effectively. This success truly reflects interdisciplinary coordination and our commitment to safeguarding mothers.”
Dr. Anup Marar, Director- Nagpur Campus, DMIHER(DU) stated that, “This case highlights the strength of our hospital’s integrated care model. When multiple departments unite with a single goal—saving a life, the outcome can be extraordinary. I am proud of the entire team for their expertise, courage, and innovation in managing this very high-risk patient.”
Dr.Vasant Gawande, Chief Medical Superintendent, SMHRC added that the safe discharge of the mother and baby marks a proud moment for the institution—an inspiring reminder that teamwork, expertise, and compassion can triumph even over the toughest medical challenges.
