Sumona Chakravarti reveals the comedy on The Kapil Sharma Show is scripted; says, ‘For me, it was purely acting'

Sumona Chakravarti, best known for playing Kapil Sharma’s on-screen wife in his comedy shows, recently shed light on her experience on The Kapil Sharma Show.

While many comedians from the show have praised its spontaneity, Sumona admitted that for her, the entire process was scripted, and she treated it as an acting job rather than a platform for improvisation.

In a conversation with Small Towns Big Stories on YouTube, Sumona revealed that comedy wasn’t her forte and that she had to work hard to adapt to the genre.

“I have my own personal sense of humour, but that wouldn’t fit into the show. So, for me, it was purely acting. It took a lot of time to get comfortable with it,” she shared.

She also spoke about her meticulous approach to preparing for each episode.

“When we got our scripts, I was one of those people who would sit with a pen and paper, highlight my lines, read, and memorise every word because comedy relies heavily on punchlines. More than that, I also memorized Kapil’s lines, as timing is crucial.”

Unlike many of her co-stars who improvised their dialogues on stage, Sumona always ensured she stuck to the script. She recalled how Kapil Sharma himself admired her dedication and ability to keep the performance structured.

“Even when others improvised, I would always bring things back to the script,” she added.

Despite her strong presence on the show for years, Sumona has taken a step back from Kapil’s projects. She was notably absent from The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, which recently announced its third season.

Reports in 2024 suggested that Sumona hadn’t left the show voluntarily but was rather not informed about Kapil’s transition to Netflix, leading to disappointment on her part.

Having maintained a relatively low profile recently, Sumona is looking forward to exploring new opportunities in films and on OTT platforms. She was last seen in Khatron Ke Khiladi 14, where she showcased a different side of herself beyond comedy.
